UK weather: New heatwave may be coming with 30C highs on the cards, Met Office warns

Another heatwave might be on its way to the UK, according to the Met Office.

Temperatures could soar past 30C next week, although they will not reach the record-breaking level seen earlier this month.

The UK was battered by thunderstorms after last week's heatwave finally ended - but there was no widespread prolonged rain.

The sunshine is now set to return with warm weather also expected next month.

Stephen Dixon, a spokesman for the Met Office, told The Mirror: "Early next week the signals from our models is that a warming trend will continue.

"We can expect above average temperatures for much country early next week - in the mid 20s to low 30s in London.

"There's a small chance some parts of the country will have a heatwave."

Mr Dixon added that above average temperatures are expected in the south of England throughout August.

This means the south of England can expect highs of at least 21C, although things will be cooler in the north.

The spokesman ruled out a heatwave this week, although sunny spells are expected.

He said: "We will see showery weather through this week with some good spells of sunshine.

"It will be generally drier in the south and high temperatures are expected this weekend.

"Temperatures in the south-east could get up to 26C over the weekend."

The Met Office could not accurately predict whether there would be further heatwaves beyond next week.

However, forecasters at The Weather Outlook website have anticipated four more heatwaves this summer.

So-called ‘Saharan Surges’ of heat will reportedly sweep in from North Africa, bringing 35C highs, the Daily Star reports.

The Weather Outlook's meteorologist Brian Gaze said: “After the record heat, four more spells which people would call heatwaves are forecast this summer.

“There is a good signal for very warm conditions around 30C this coming weekend, and then mid-August and late August are expected to reach over 28C in the south.

“There’s a good probability of 35C highs in August, with heat from Europe and north Africa likely to reach Britain again. And another 28C spell is expected in September.”

It comes after the UK recorded its hottest day ever, with a reading of 40.3C at Coningsby, Lincolnshire, on July 19.

On the same day, a total of 46 stations across the country exceeded the UK's previous hottest record of 38.7C.

The extreme heat sparked a series of wildfires, prompting fire services across the country to declare major incidents.

Mike Kendon, a climate information scientist at the Met Office, said: “Temperatures on 18 July were exceptional but they moved 2 to 4°C higher on 19 July, making this date unprecedented in the context of long term climate records.

“What’s particularly notable is how much more widespread the heat was from this event than the previous two occurrences of temperatures in excess of 38°C in the UK.

"Temperature records tend to get broken by modest amounts and by just a few stations, but the recent heat broke the national record by 1.6°C and across an extensive area of the country from Kent to North Yorkshire and from Suffolk to Warwickshire.

“Even when you factor in the temperatures seen in summer 1976, they didn’t reach anywhere near the levels seen this week, although that was a much more prolonged spell of hot and dry weather.”
