UK weather: More summer sunshine to come as Brits brace for weekend scorcher

Summer sun will continue to shine as we head into the last day of the working week with some temperatures nudging above average for this time of year.

The east coast will continue to be an anomaly to the rest of the country as it has done all week and be much cooler, with Berwick struggling to hit any higher than 12C but elsewhere will see the mercury hit above 20C.

Wales and much of the Midlands will hit the twenties while Salisbury in the south coast and Tobermory - on the Isle of Mull in the Scottish Inner Hebrides - and Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands could be as hot as 21C.

The UV index will not reach the highs of 8 on Thursday but much of the country will experience highs where sunscreen and seeking shade in the midday hours are recommended.

The cloud will finally push its way back towards the North Sea, bringing another dry morning for most apart from north eastern Scotland. There could be a touch of air frost in Scotland on Friday morning before brightening up.

Met Office meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth said: "For many of us it'll be a similar start to recent mornings. The difference will be though, that cloud will lift up and break up more readily than it has done this week.

Friday is set to bring a high UV index for Brits (PA)

"And that means by lunchtime, much of the UK will be under clear blue sky. So plenty of warm and quite strong sunshine through Friday afternoon."

Ms Shuttleworth added: "Once again, we've got high pressure in charge throughout the weekend. It's the same high pressure we've had through much of the week, centred to the north west of the UK and that's why we've got this north or northeasterly breeze."

It appears to be a case of rinse and repeat over the weekend as the breezy nights will drag cloud cover over the east coast before breaking through as we head into midday.

UK 5 day weather forecast

This Evening and Tonight:

Cloud across eastern areas will gradually spread westwards across much of England, east Wales and southeastern Scotland. Clearer skies elsewhere with a few fog patches forming. Colder than previous nights in the north, with a touch of frost in Scotland.

Friday:

Early cloud soon breaking and clearing more readily than previous days. Warmest in the west, with some southern and eastern coastal areas cooler thanks to the northeasterly breeze.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

High pressure will dominate giving mainly fine and settled weather. Warm sunshine for many, although low cloud persisting across parts of the north and east. Breezy in the south.
