UK weather: Met Office warns arctic big freeze could bring UK snow as mercury plunges

Weather forecasters say an Arctic blast set to freeze the north of the UK and could push south.

Forecasters say more torrid weather is in store next week and as we head into February.

And the Met Office warned of a “severe frost” and icy conditions today as a deep freeze settles across large parts of England and Wales.

Forecaster Clare Nasir said: “There will be Arctic air streaming down from the north delivering snow showers, particularly in the far northeast of the country.”

The plummeting mercury could see snow falling across northern Scotland as early as Monday, The Express reports.

If this materialises, it could drift south - hitting England by early February, the forecaster said.

This has prompted the UK Health and Security Agency to urge people living in central and southern England to look out for vulnerable neighbours.

In its recent forecast, the Met Office said: “Cloudy and windy in the northwest with further rain or drizzle on hills.

“Dry but often rather cloudy elsewhere, though a few sunny spells are possible.”

The low temperatures are set to remain through the start of next week, with patchy frost and fog descending on parts of the country by Tuesday morning.

The Met Office said: “Elsewhere, often breezy with rain at times and mild.”

These predictions are mirrored with what forecaster WXCHARTS believe the country will experience.

According to its maps, the Arctic blast will sweep across much of the northern UK from Tuesday.

This will send the mercury plummeting - to between 0C (32F) and 1C (33.8F) across swathes of England, according to the website.

And while temperatures are predicted to recover, they are set to come crashing down by early February when they are expected to dip to as low as -2C (28.4F) in large parts of England.

Met Office UK has produced its long range weather forecast from Jan 27 to Feb 5.

It says rain will clear in the far southeast during the day, however blustery showers will continue for northeastern areas, with a risk of some gales.

Otherwise, a fine and dry start to the period with variable cloud, this bringing settled conditions across the south with overnight frost and some morning fog patches in areas with higher elevation.

Temperatures likely to be close to average in the south, whereas milder in the north, trending slightly above normal.

Settled conditions looking to continue to dominate through the remainder of January, however, rain or showers at times for the north and northwest, with occasional strong winds here.

Heading into February there is an increasing likelihood of more unsettled conditions.
