UK weather: Met Office's 12- hour warning as rain set to lash parts of South West

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for parts of South Wales as wind and rain are set to hammer the South West of England on Sunday.

Much of south Wales is being warned to expect disruption due to "heavy rain", with the flooding of some homes and businesses "likely". Meanwhile, Bristol will not escape the deluge with a very wet Sunday forecast, coupled with high winds.

Up in the north, a blanket of snow is forecast for north-western Scotland in the early hours of this morning (Saturday). As the day progresses heavy rain will also fall in the areas where snow is forecast.

Ahead of the weather warning coming into force, Saturday (today) is expected to be wet, according to the Met Office forecast, with rain due to arrive from around 1pm, lasting for much of the afternoon. High winds are also expected, with gusts forecast to reach up to 34 mph through much of the afternoon.

The rain will ease off by 8pm tonight, leaving a layer of heavy cloud overnight. As the Met Office yellow warning comes into force at midnight, the rain will return briefly in the very early hours of Sunday morning as the winds being to pick up. Gusts will reach 31 mph by 3am and that will continue to pick up through the course of the morning.

It will be raining heavily by 8am and that is expected to last for 12 hours. The high winds will peak at gusts of 43 mph at midday, and it will keep howling until the late afternoon when it being to settle down, reaching 20 mph gusts by 8pm.

The Met Office yellow warning is in force from midnight on Sunday morning until 6pm in the evening and is concentrated throughout much of south Wales. The agency warns to expect travel disruption and flooding through the course of the day.

If you are travelling over the border to Wales, the Met Office says what you should expect:

  • Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer
  • Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer
  • Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely

Over the week ahead, temperatures are expected to remain mild in the South West, although rain should be expected each day. It will be heaviest on Tuesday, but it will clear by the end of the week with sun expected on Friday.

Today:

It will be a dry but mostly cloudy morning, although outbreaks of rain will arrive in the afternoon. Windy throughout with strong gusts along western coasts. Feeling chilly if exposed to this wind. Maximum temperature 10 °C.

Tonight:

Outbreaks of rain continuing overnight, these turning heavier through the early hours of Sunday. Winds easing momentarily ahead of coastal gales developing in the far southwest. Cloudy and mild. Minimum temperature 7 °C.

Sunday:

Outbreaks of heavy rain through Sunday morning, then easing off during the afternoon. Widely cloudy and windy with gales along southern coasts. Generally mild but feeling chillier in the wind. Maximum temperature 11 °C.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Remaining unsettled with further outbreaks of rain and showers over the coming days. Windy at times. A cold night on Monday but becoming widely mild by Wednesday.
