UK weather: Met Office forecasting 'snow and sleet' for the South West tonight amid reports of 'snow bomb'

The Met Office is forecasting that snow and sleet could hit the South West overnight as wind and cloud move in.

The temperature is set to drop again after a very mild week, with high winds picking up and rain hitting the region over the weekend.

Meanwhile, WXcharts show that a 100-mile snow flurry is set to move over the UK this month in time for Valentine's Day, with charts showing that between 2cm and 3cm could fall per hour in our region on February 12 and 13.

The Met Office says that today will be a "mild and largely dry day" with sunny spells this afternoon and light winds, but that changes overnight.

The winds will start to pick up later in the evening as a band of strong winds and clouds moves in overnight and there could be some sleet or snow in areas of higher ground.

Friday will see cold and windy weather with some sunny spells and also some rain, while the weekend is set to be milder, although the wind and rain will remain.

Meanwhile, the latest forecasts by WX Charts show a huge 100-mile-wide swathe of snow moving across the Westcountry over the weekend of February 12 and 13, reports Gloucestershire Live.

The charts show between two and three centimetres an hour could fall across the region.

The forecast model shows snow arriving on Saturday evening and into Sunday morning before moving eastwards across the country.

It will feel cold, with temperatures hovering just above freezing, and if the forecast model is right, this will be the first major snow the region has seen this winter.

It will come just days after some parts of the county were battered by Storm Corrie, with 90mph winds.

The Met Office long-range weather forecast has no mention of snow in its modelling yet and says the country will continue to see a north/south divide with milder temperatures in the south.

It added that wintry showers will be confined mainly to the north of the country.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “A north/south divide is expected to continue through the rest of the period with settled conditions and milder temperatures prevailing in the south, whilst unsettled and wetter conditions with strong winds are seen across northern regions, especially the northwest, with near average temperatures.

“Some, mostly short-lived, spells of colder temperatures are likely in the north and northwest, where some wintry showers could develop.”

Long term forecasting can change, of course, but if the charts are correct, it could be time to dig out the sledge that has been gathering dust.
