UK weather: Mercury to soar before washout weekend sees rainy deluge lash Brits

Wednesday will see the country prepare itself for wet weather later in the week with steady and stable conditions.

As the UK edges closer to the historic event of King Charles' Coronation on Saturday, all eyes will be focused on the weather over the coming days.

It has been a steady start of the working week for most so far and not much will change on Wednesday as the southwest will enjoy peaks of up to 18C during the afternoon, whereas the northeast coast will still entertain slightly cooler temperatures.

However, it should be a settled day for majority of the country before weather systems work its way across heading into Thursday and Friday.

There could be spots of showers for Northern Ireland in the early hours of Wednesday morning, with similar conditions in Cumbria and southwest Scotland.

Elsewhere, it will be a bright start with England and Wales set for temperatures of between 12C and 18C over the course of the day.

Met Office meteorologist Clare Nasir said: "Much of England and Wales is getting away with some brighter weather, the cloud just coming and going as rain gradually pushes towards western Scotland.

"Further south and west, winds pick up a little bit of strength and turning a bit gusty over the moors. This onshore breeze keeps temperatures along the east coast slightly lower.

"The rain gradually weakens as it pushes ever more northeastwards towards the northern isles overnight into Thursday morning and gaining some clearer skies."

UK five-day Met Office forecast

Today:

Fine and dry with a mixture of cloud and some bright or sunny spells for most, best of the sunshine in the southeast. Thicker cloud across Scotland, however, will bring outbreaks of rain to some areas. Windy in the southwest.

Tonight:

Early evening rain over Scotland will become confined to parts of Shetland and Orkney overnight. Otherwise, dry with variable amounts of cloud and some clear spells.

Thursday:

Rain developing over Wales and southwest England during the morning then spreads into parts of the Midlands, northern England and Northern Ireland later. Mostly fine and dry elsewhere. Windy.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Unsettled throughout. Widespread showers Friday, some heavy and thundery. Rain reaches the southwest Saturday, occasionally persistent, spreading erratically northeast. Further showers Sunday. Temperatures above normal, although cool along northeastern coasts.
