UK weather: Heavy rain torrent to lash the nation as King Charles coronation draws near

Britain will continue experiencing warm conditions ahead of the weekend despite deluges of heavy rain for much of Friday.

The downpours could cause issues on the road as the UK get set for another extended weekend courtesy of King Charles' Coronation weekend.

It will be a mild start for much of the country to end the working week but murky conditions will make it soggy for northwest England, southwest Scotland and Northern Ireland.

As explained by Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin, the UK is losing high pressure and it is being replaced by low pressure which subsequently brings wet weather.

The weather front will continue to move northwards and will ease off as it passes through Scotland, but this will be taken over by pockets of heavy rain across the majority of the country.

Mr Deakin said: "Some brighter skies, we will see a bit of sunshine but that will allow showers to pop off from late morning onwards and certainly across a good chunk of England, Wales and southern Scotland.

"Some heavy thundery showers are possible as the day goes on. Slow moving, intense downpours as well so one of those days where one place gets a real soaking, whereas 10 miles away it may stay completely dry."

There will be brighter spells as we reach the afternoon with sunshine trying to break through, particularly in the south of England, while the North Sea coast will be worst affected - a theme of the week so far.

Hail and thunder could cause traffic issues on the north east coastline but temperatures will still be in the high teens across the country, with the south east of England set to reach highs of 18C.

Travel disruptions could carry on ahead of the long weekend as downpours continue until the early hours of Saturday morning, until another weather front moves in from the southwest.

Mr Deakin added: "Cloud gathering, outbreaks of rain trickling in and the breeze starting to pick up once more. That is the wet weather that's going to spread northwards during Saturday."

UK five-day Met Office forecast

This Evening and Tonight:

Bursts of showery rain continuing to move northeastwards across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, perhaps reaching southern Scotland. Northern Scotland remaining dry. Mild in the south.

Friday:

Rain, drizzle and low cloud affecting eastern Scotland. Turning brighter across England, Wales and Northern Ireland but showers breaking out, some heavy and thundery.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Spells of rain affecting southern areas on Saturday, with sunshine and showers further north. Most of the wet weather likely in the east on Sunday. More rain on Monday.
