UK weather forecast: ‘Second spring’ as Britain sees record temperatures for November

Brits are set for heavy rain and strong winds but temperatures are hitting the mid-teens in what is being dubbed a “second spring”.

It has been a wet month up and down the country with Shoreham in southern England and Inverbervie in Scotland having provisionally their wettest Novembers on record with 176.4mm and 133mm, respectively, so far.

And there is more to come with yellow rain warnings in place for the weekend from the Met Office and the Environment Agency has four flood warnings and 53 flood alerts for England, while there are five flood alerts in Scotland and four in Wales.

But the warmer weather has led to talk of a second spring for plants and flowers which are continuing their bloom for months longer than usual with it being 2.2C warmer than average so far this November.

It also comes on the back of a drought this summer and very warm temperatures for September and October.

This weekend BBC forecaster Alina Jenkins said warm winds from the south east will mean temperatures will range from 11C to 14C and the nights also will be mild.

But it will also be wet and windy.

"More rain to come on Saturday, particularly, some of it will be heavy, most of us having a drier day on Sunday," she said.

"That rain is all tied in with this Atlantic system gradually pushing its way eastwards through Saturday, some of that rain is going to be heavy.

"Also notice that the isobars are close together so we will see some gusty winds especially for western areas.

"So this is how Saturday shapes up, this band of rain gradually pushing north and eastwards through south west England, Wales, north west England, western Scotland and Northern Ireland although drier here through the afternoon, although still likely to see a few heavy showers."

The Met Office yellow warnings are for southern Wales, south-west England and southern Scotland.

The warnings in Wales and England come into force at 2pm on Saturday and will remain in place until 3am on Sunday, while in Scotland it is in place from midday until midnight on Saturday.

The areas of England and Wales covered by the weather warning - which include Cardiff, Swansea, Portsmouth and Cornwall - can expect as much as 40-60 mm of rain, particularly over hills in south Wales and south-west England.

The rain will be accompanied by strong winds, with gusts of 45-55mph expected over hills and around coasts.

Forecasters are warning that buses and trains will probably be affected, with journey times taking longer, while flooding of homes and businesses is possible.

In Scotland, the warning covers Angus, Clackmannanshire, Dundee, Perth and Kinross, Stirling, and Argyll and Bute.

Forecasters say 20-30mm of rain is expected with 45mm possible on high ground, and given the saturated ground there is a risk of some localised flooding.
