UK Weather forecast: Met Office forecasts snow in parts of the UK as temperatures plunge

Snow could fall in some areas of the UK within days as temperatures continue to drop into the autumn, according to the Met Office.

Forecasters from the national weather agency say flakes could fall over higher ground in northern Scotland on Monday in what they described as "fairly typical" weather for this time of year.

They added that this would not affect lower ground, and was unlikely to cause any disruption.

Other parts of the country are meanwhile expected to see plenty of rain, with downpours predicted across northern England and Scotland today, as well as at the start of next week.

The south will meanwhile see more dry and bright conditions, with 20C highs even expected in the capital today.

Met Office forecaster Annie Shuttleworth said: "From Monday there are some signals of some snow showers over the hills in Scotland, fairly typical for the time of year.

"We're not expecting snow in any low lying areas. Or any disruption from it.

"That's just early next week this risk, from midweek onwards, temperatures are looking to return back to closer to average with more wetter and windier typical autumnal weather and no risk of snow.

"It's relatively short-lived and small risk, nothing that will be too disruptive or that's unusual."

Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern also predicted a cool weekend for many, saying temperatures would be "below average for the second half of the weekend" and "into Monday as well as Tuesday.”

This will mean lows in single figures across much of the UK, he explained.

Rain in north and west, fine and warm further southeast.
