UK weather forecast: Hotter than the Spanish Costas as country to bask in 16C heat

Brits are set for a frosty start to Tuesday but temperatures will soon rise during the day and with highs of 16C it is likely to be warmer than the Costa Brava in Spain.

After a weekend of mixed weather with wind and rain, a spell of more settled conditions is set for the UK this week which started with some sunny spells on Monday.

And it is likely to be warmer again on Tuesday especially in the south of the UK where temperatures could get into the mid-teens.

A high pressure front is moving north bringing the warmer conditions but how warm it gets depends on when it meets a low pressure that is coming from the north west.

On Tuesday morning it could drop as low as -1C in central England and it will be low single figures around the UK.

BBC weather forecaster Matt Taylor said: "A touch of frost is possible just about anywhere but a bright enough start for many, a few isolated showers through East Anglia and the Midlands, drifting their way northwards through Yorkshire during the day.

"Much of England and Wales varying amounts of sunshine, the best of which will be in the morning. Some sunny spells east of Scotland, Northern Ireland, isolated showers.

"It is the west of Scotland and the west of Northern Ireland where it will turn wetter, quite breezy for a time during the morning.

"That breeze though will help break up the cloud into eastern Scotland."

In the sun, balmy conditions can be expected and temperatures could be higher than some Spanish holiday resorts including the Costa Brava where it is unlikely that the mercury will rise about 14C on Tuesday.

Mr Taylor said there would be a north-south divide though in the temperatures with it probably staying in single figures in Scotland.

"Temperatures in the north 7C or 8C but in the sunshine further south a pleasant spring day up to 15C or 16C," he said.

Similar conditions are expected for the rest of the week where temperatures will be cold overnight but it will be quite pleasant during the day for most parts of the country.
