Brits are set for heavy rain, thunder and hail on Tuesday along with gusts of wind in excess of 50mph.
Showers are expected to continue drenching parts of the UK after a wet and windy night prompted weather warnings across swathes of the country.
And blustery showers, thunder and strong winds are set to hit western areas from Tuesday morning although not with the same intensity as on Monday and there will be outbreaks of sunshine with temperatures ranging from 10C to 15C.
The Met Office said that despite weather remaining “unsettled”, the harsh conditions from Monday night – when gusts of 60-70mph were seen in Cornwall, Devon and west Wales – would subside.
Yellow weather warnings were in place for parts of Northern Ireland, Wales and south-west England from 6pm to midnight, with the national weather service urging travellers to remain vigilant amid expected disruption to roads and transport.
BBC forecaster Louise Lear said: "Tuesday is an improving story, it will be a case of sunny spells and scattered showers for many accompanied by some squally winds, though, still from time to time.
"So we’ve seen this mass of cloud spilling in off the Atlantic and the weather front is producing some rain, some of it really quite heavy. It’s quite a narrow band of rain and it is pushing through at a quite a pace because it is being driven along by gusts of winds in excess of 60 or 70 mph. So by 6am or 7am in the morning the front will be sitting out in the North Sea and leaves a trail of squally showers behind."
There will still be stormy weather.
Ms Lear continued: "There will be more sunshine around on Tuesday, some of those showers really quite heavy, with hail, some thunder mixed in there as well and they are going to push their way in from the west further inland.
"As we go through the afternoon we are still going to see some gusty winds, widely 30 to 40 mph but we could still see gusts in excess of 50 mph down in the south west."
Met Office meteorologist Simon Partridge agreed that Tuesday would see continued rain and wind, but “the worst will have passed”.
“It will still be windy, but it should be a little more business-as-usual windy,” he said.
“Most of the strongest winds (on Monday) have come in after dark when most people are at home, and the weather warnings will expire tonight.
“There is further rain through the week so we’ll keep an eye on that.
“Tomorrow quite a windy day – not as windy as tonight but windy across the country with a mix of showers and sunshine, showers in the west and possibly a bit of thunder and drier and brighter in the east, but still a blustery, unsettled sort of day.”

Some inland, eastern and northeastern areas becoming largely dry with clear spells, perhaps just a passing shower. Exposed southern and western coastal counties still seeing more frequent, sometimes heavier showers.
Wednesday:
Sunny intervals but still some showers at first, these quite frequent, possibly heavy, in some exposed western areas and near Channel coasts. Showers easing later but rain into northwest UK.
Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:
Some rain and stronger winds at times for many northwestern areas, particularly western Scotland. Drier and sometimes brighter further south and east. Widely very mild, particularly so in the northeast.
