UK weather forecast: Freezing fog warning as beast from the east brings -8C blast

Brits are set for freezing fog today as cold air from the east could see temperatures drop as low as -8C for south of the UK.

A north-south divide is on the cards as warm air from the Atlantic could push temperatures close to double figures in the north of Scotland but it will be a lot colder in southern and central England to start the day.

A high pressure is stretching right across from Russia and cold air from the continent will make it feel very cold with possible -8C lows in Oxfordshire.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for freezing fog that runs until 10.30am on Tuesday and covers the border between England and Wales.

It states: “Freezing fog will lead to difficult driving conditions and could cause travel delays in some areas.”

People have been told to expect “slower journey times with delays to bus and train services possible”.

After last weeks Arctic blast, temperatures were expected to rise this week but there is now little sign of warmer weather on the horizon.

BBC forecaster Tomasz Schafernaker said: "A large area of high pressure is extending all the way from Russia, through the Baltic, reaching our shores, but the temperature contrast is huge across the country, a bit like last night.

“On the one hand we have mind south westerlies affecting northern Ireland and Scotland, on the other colder continental air, affecting the south east of the country and on top of that, the frosty conditions in the south of the UK, freezing fog as well, anywhere from the Welsh marches towards East Anglia.

"So let’s have a look at the temperatures early in the morning, this is where the frost will be, bit of an onshore wind here in the extreme south east where perhaps not quite so cold but in Oxfordshire it could be as low as -8C. A lot milder in western Scotland.”

Throughout the day it is set to clear up with some clear skies but remaining cold.
