UK weather forecast: Exact day widespread heavy snow returns with -13C Arctic blast

Brits can expect heavy snow to return to the country with over 15 inches falling in the second half of January when Arctic air sweeps in with freezing temperatures down to -13C.

The weather has been mild since the freeze before Christmas where the temperature dipped below -10C and it is set to feel bitterly cold again by mid-January.

Maps from WXCharts show that heavy snow can be expected on January 20 for Scotland and there will also be flurries across the country over the subsequent days including down to the south coast.

Temperatures could drop as low as -13C and -7C in northern England, while it will also dip below freezing in the south, according to the charts.

Before that there is more generally milder weather with some wintry spells for the north.

There is heavy showers and gales expected for this weekend with the Met Office issuing a yellow warning for rain in southern Wales and southwest England which will run until 9am on Saturday.

They state: “Heavy rain is expected to cause some travel disruption and flooding on Saturday morning.

Adding: “Flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible. Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer. Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer.”

BBC weather forecast Helen Willetts said: “So it has been a mild, wet and windy start to 2023 and that trend will continue for us really for the next five to 10 days.

"Here’s the weekend’s powerful area of low pressure pushing strong to gale force winds in and rain. That clears out of the way and then the next area of low pressure rushes in to replace it so all the time keeping that mostly mild Atlantic flow.

"But as they clear away at times we will find some colder air tucking in so it is never far away from the north of the UK but for the majority the theme this week as you can see is further outbreaks of wet and windy weather, not just this weekend but into next week as well.”
