Brits are set to wake up to dense fog with a weather warning in place for a huge swathe of the country and freezing -5C temperatures.
Stargazers were able to get amazing views of the Wolf Moon, the first full moon of the year, with clear skies up and down the country on Monday night.
But it was only a brief gap in the fog, which returned in the early hours of Tuesday morning and sparked a yellow weather warning for much of England, going right up the east coast and also into Wales.
The Met Office warned: “Fog likely to cause slower travel and possible disruption in places.
“(Expect) slower journey times and possible hazardous driving conditions, with delays to bus and train services also possible. There is a chance of delays or cancellations to flights.”
Forecaster Aidan McGivern said: “Chilly start to the day for many places, temperatures as low as -5C in some sheltered parts of England and Wales and those dense fog patches to watch out for if you are on the roads first thing for example and poor visibility.
"And that continuing into the afternoon in some parts of central and eastern England but otherwise I think enough cloud will drift in from the south to lift the fog.”
The outlook is for milder temperatures for Scotland and Northern Ireland where it is expected to avoid a frost.
Heading into Tuesday night it is expected to be cloudy with drizzle which means there is likely to be less fog and frost but the Met Office is warning of an "Arctic plunge" during the day.
“As we start off Wednesday because of the larger amount of cloud across the UK less widespread frost and fog but still some pockets in the south and north of that weather front.
“It (the front) does turn things colder as it moves south across the country, a bit of an Arctic plunge but only ever so brief because high pressure will be moving back in for the end of the week.
"Blue on the map is quite wide for the middle part of Wednesday as the weather fronts clear."
