UK weather forecast: Brits to be lashed by heavy rain as flood alerts issued

Wet conditions are expected to last for the rest of the week, according to the latest weather forecasts.

Weather maps from the Met Office show a dry start to Tuesday being interrupted by showers, sometimes heavy, by the late afternoon, with clouds moving in a north-easterly direction after arriving in the southeast.

This same weather front will continue to bring rain across the north on Wednesday, with more isolated showers following on Thursday.

The end of the week will then bring another wave of heavy rain across the south and southeast, which will last into the weekend.

In the meantime, a number of flood alerts also remain in place today following recent downpours, with river levels now reaching their peak as rain water continues to drain.

Locations under an advisory stating 'flooding is possible' on Tuesday include the River Trent in Derbyshire, the Middle Level of the Fens in Cambridgeshire and Norfolk, and the Upper River Wey in the southeast.

Some coastal areas are also under an Environment Agency flood alert, including a stretch of coastline in Essex from Clacton to St Peters Flat and the Colne and Blackwater estuaries.

It follows a weekend of wild weather which saw storms hit large parts of the UK.

One piece of footage taken on Sunday shows the rare moment a massive lightning strike lit up stormy seas in the early afternoon.

Elsewhere thunderstorms battered Dorset overnight with a band of heavy rain throughout the weekend.
