Brits are enjoying a glorious Indian summer as revellers hit the beach and the Doncaster races in today's 24C heat.

Forecasters say that the mercury could reach as high as 27C this weekend as the UK enjoys a toasty start to autumn.

On Saturday, racegoers were treated to clear blue skies as they watched Logician maintained his unbeaten record to win the prestigious St Leger at Doncaster.

While many were basking in the end-of-summer sunshine, western Scotland was hit by gusty winds and heavy rain.

But the majority of the UK can expect to see the sunny rays continuing all the way until next weekend, especially in the southeast, according to the Met Office.

Met Office spokeswoman Helen Roberts said that temperatures hit 24C on Saturday in Heathrow and Kew Garden as people across the country enjoy the sunshine.

“Today it has been quite widely warm across England and Wales with temperatures above average,” Ms Roberts said.

“In parts of Scotland this wasn’t the case, with wet and windy weather, especially in the west.

“And it will continue to be wet tomorrow with windy gusty conditions. But tomorrow it will be a brighter day up in Scotland,” Ms Roberts added.

“Northern England and Northern Ireland, and the Midlands will see a very cloudy and murky day with outbreaks of rain on Sunday.”

“But in south England and Wales it will be a bright, warm day although it will tend to cool off by the end of tomorrow - except the far southeast corner.”

Ms Roberts said in general Sunday will be a glorious day in the south with temperatures reaching around 26-27C, which is “pretty good for this time of year.”

“Next week - Monday looks like it will be a far more cloudy and cool day.

"But for the rest of the week temperature will increase leading up to a lovely warm weekend.”
