UK weather: Brits set for more sunshine next week as temperatures 'surge significantly'

People across the country can expect clear skies and bright sunshine next week as temperatures are set to rise.

The UK saw the hottest day of the year so far on Saturday, when temperatures peaked at 20°C in the village of Kinlochewe in northern Scotland.

The Met Office said it will be "breezier and colder" today, with cloudy conditions in parts of the South West, but the mercury levels will begin rising again next week.

According to the forecaster, London will see clear skies and top temperatures of around 17°C on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

BBC forecaster Chris Fawkes said the weather “is going to get a lot, lot warmer” next week.

“As the southerly winds continue to push northwards through Tuesday and Wednesday, those temperatures are going to surge significantly," he said.

“Tuesday - a fine day with some sunshine - maybe a few isolated showers developing through the afternoon but most of you will have a dry day though.

“Temperatures will reach a high of 19°C in London, 15°C in Glasgow and 14°C in Belfast.

“The fine weather with prolonged spells of Spring sunshine, for many of us will last for much of the weekend, with temperatures on the warm side for the time of year.”

Met Office meteorologist Dan Stroud said Sunday will be cooler, with top temperatures of around 12°C in the south of England.

He added: “High pressure continues to dominate into the new working week, with fair amounts of cloud and temperatures increasing during the course of the week.”

It comes after weather forecaster Jim Dale told the Express that next month temperatures are expected to reach 28°C - the Met Office’s threshold for a heatwave.

"I wouldn’t be surprised to see 26°C, 27°C, 28°C in the middle of April,” he said.

“Longer-term, given what’s happening globally in terms of the temperature profiles in the southern hemisphere and what’s also happening in the United States, I would not be surprised if we started to see some big highlights - in whichever direction it goes, either cold or hot."

Five-day forecast

Sunday:

Most parts dry with good spells of sunshine. Cloudier at times over East Anglia and far southeast England where a little showery rain is possible. Breezy and colder than today.

Monday to Wednesday:

Chance of a few isolated showers, otherwise widely fine and dry with plenty of sunshine after some early mist and fog. A cold, frosty start on Monday before turning warmer.
