UK weather: Blistering 30C temps as forecasters say heatwave criteria could be met

Weather conditions in the UK are set to be split this weekend with contrasting fortunes either side of a northwest/southeast divide.

It's good news for those living in the south and east, where heatwave criteria could be met amid forecast temperatures in excess of 30C.

The south east in particular will feel the heat the most, with London predicted to be the hottest part of the UK, Met Office forecasters have said - although no official weather warnings have been issued.

On the flipside, however, are the areas in the north and west, where intermittent heavy showers are likely throughout Saturday and Sunday.

Outbreaks of rain are forecast for North Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland later today, whilst tomorrow will see widespread downpours hit the north west of England.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert said: "There are some marked contrasts in the UK's weather this weekend, with some potentially impactful thunderstorms developing affecting the northern half of the UK on Sunday, while further south it will become hot.

"For those in the north, there is a chance of thunderstorms developing as we see a change to cooler conditions with a chance that these could become organised with heavy rain, hail, lightning and gusty winds. Whether thunderstorms develop is finely balanced and there is a possibility of warnings being issued, so keep an eye on the forecast this weekend for any updates."

Mr Lehnert continued: "Official heatwave criteria could be met for parts of southern and eastern England by the end of the weekend. It’s worth noting the temperatures in the south will remain quite high overnight this weekend, so it’s important to look out for those who may be more vulnerable to heat."

The UK Health Security Agency has issued a Heat Health Alert (Birmingham Post and Mail)

In light of the south east forecast, meanwhile, the UK Health Security Agency has issued a Heat Health Alert.

The body's Head of Extreme Events, Dr Agostinho Sousa warns: "This alert means that in the coming days we are likely to experience another period of hot weather, so it’s important that everyone takes sensible precautions while enjoying the sun.

"Forecast temperatures this week could primarily impact those over the age of 65 or those with pre-existing health conditions. If you have friends, family or neighbours who are more vulnerable, it is important to check in on them and ensure they are aware of the forecasts and are following the necessary advice."

UK weather forecast

Today:

Outbreaks of rain continuing northeastwards across Northern Ireland and Scotland, with some thundery showers. Dry with hazy sunny spells across England and Wales. Very warm, and feeling humid, especially in the southeast.

Tonight:

Any showers easing in the north and west, although further rain, perhaps thundery, in the far northwest later, with a strong breeze developing. Dry with clear spells elsewhere. Rather warm.

Sunday:

Remaining hot across the southeast on Sunday but rain in the west, locally heavy and thundery, will spread eastwards and bring fresher conditions into the evening.
