UK weather: Bank Holiday sizzler on the way with 26C temperatures forecast by Met Office

We all want to see sunshine after the rain, to see blue skies lying over the mountains again...

And forecasters promise that we will this Bank Holiday weekend.

After rain lashed swathes of the country today, temperatures of up to 26C are forecast from Friday.

But people heading off for the Bank Holiday in England and Wales should expect showers in some areas, with Monday set to be the driest day.

Meteorologist Craig Snell said: “Overall, it’s going to be a pleasant Bank Holiday weekend, but be prepared for the odd shower if you are entertaining in the back garden.”

It is good news after the rain and thunderstorms today.

In Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk, 62.8mm of rain fell in just three hours while 61.4mm fells in Andrewsfield in Dunmow, Essex, over six hours.

Met Office meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth said: “The average rainfall for August for an area in southern England is 67.8mm, so it was a significant amount of rainfall.”

The rain made the Reading Festival a mud bath, flooding tents set up by the early-birds. In East London, Dagenham Heathway station was closed in the morning after flooding.

The RAC expects tomorrow to be the busiest for road traffic, with 4.3 million cars travelling to hotspots such as Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset. RAC spokesman Rod Dennis said: “The cost of living crisis means many people have again opted for a break in the UK.” The AA has issued an amber traffic warning.

And train passengers can expect disruption. Network Rail said £90million of upgrades would be carried out over the weekend, but 95% of lines would remain open.

Tesco expects to sell more than a million packs of sausages and 3.5 million bottles of beer this weekend.
