UK Weather Alert: Wind and Rain to Smash Parts of the Country Soon

After a lovely spell of sunshine, the UK is about to see a dramatic shift in weather. The calm conditions are set to be replaced by wind, rain, and a fair bit of unsettled weather heading into next week.

According to WX Charts, wet weather is expected to move in from the Atlantic, starting with heavy rain hitting parts of the UK on Tuesday, April 15. Areas like Wales, the south-west of England, the West Midlands, and north-west England should brace themselves for some heavy downpours. By Wednesday, April 16, the rain will continue, with forecasts predicting rainfall of up to 50mm by 6pm. The wettest conditions will likely be seen in North Devon, North Somerset, Wales, and south-west Scotland.

Temperatures on April 14 will be a bit cooler than what we’ve been used to lately, ranging from 10C to 12C in Scotland, 10C to 17C in England, 12C to 13C in Wales, and Northern Ireland. So, while the sunshine is still hanging around this week, the Met Office warns that things are about to change as temperatures dip this weekend and into next week.

In its long-range forecast, the Met Office said the country could expect some unsettled weather, though they noted it’s still early to get into specifics. A spokesperson for the Met Office explained, “Largely dry and fine conditions will continue through much of this week, though with some showers possible in parts of Scotland from Friday and into Saturday. There are also signals for some more unsettled weather on Sunday and into next week, but it’s too early to give specific details.”

The unsettled weather is set to arrive as low pressure systems push in from the southwest, meaning a good portion of the UK will see outbreaks of rain as we head into the weekend and the third week of April. Nick Finnis, senior forecaster at Netweather, confirmed that while most of the UK will be dry and sunny this week, the high pressure giving us this settled spell will be replaced by low pressure over the weekend. He said: “There are signs of a breakdown in the settled conditions as we head into the run-up to Easter. High pressure will give way to low pressure moving in from the southwest at the weekend.”

By Friday, April 11, a low-pressure system near Portugal will start to move towards North West Europe, potentially bringing rain to parts of England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. Mr. Finnis also warned that there is some uncertainty regarding its exact track, so it’s worth keeping an eye on the forecast.

Despite the rain, there should still be some dry spells, especially on Saturday, though Sunday is expected to be cloudier with a higher chance of rain.
