UK uni gives students cost of living payments of up to £170 after lobbying from union

The University of Manchester recently announced they would be providing cost-of-living support payments of £170 to students attending the university.

The payment was to go to all full-time students fully registered on an undergraduate or postgraduate degree, or postgraduate programme.

Those who were studying part-time are also eligible to receive a payment of £85.

There was a very small number of professional-level post-graduate courses however who will not be eligible to receive the payment and the University of Manchester has listed those courses on its website.

In order to claim the payment, students needed a UK bank account, a UK mobile number, access to their student email account and complete registration for this academic year.

Students also asked to make sure their mobile phone number was up to date on the student system by December 4 as Manchester University was going to contact students when the money was available to claim.

Students studying at the university should have already received it by now as the payments were planned to be given out before the Christmas break.

However, the University of Manchester has extended the original deadline for students to update their contact details and anyone who missed the original deadline now has until January 8, 2023.

The University will process further payments after this date and if someone misses it, they will not be able to claim the £170.

The cost of living support payments came from lobbying by the University’s Student Union.

Robbie Beale, from the Students' Union, told the BBC that it all began in September after the University installed microwaves and boiling water taps across its campus.

Robbie said: “We got £100,000 for microwaves and boiling water taps all over campus, so people can bring in their own food and heat it up. It just ramped up stage by stage."

Alongside this, Manchester Uni has also provided grants of up to £2,000 to students who are struggling and provided an extra £2,000 for postgraduate research students who receive University of Manchester-funded stipends.

It has also previously announced a £1,000 cost-of-living payment for all staff earning less than £71,000 a year and a 3% pay rise for graduate teaching assistants.
