UK Travel: Covid restrictions for Spain, America and Hong Kong as vaccination rules change

The travel sector is finally re-opening for many tourists wanting to get away on holiday after two years of lockdown and restrictions.

Just yesterday (February 11) Spain changed their travel requirements for those aged between 12 and 17-years-old.

It came not long after the first rule change which resulted in many families having to cancel their long-awaited spring half term trip.

But what are these changes - and what are the rules if you want to fly to the likes of America, Spain or Hong Kong?

Covid rules when travelling to America

According to the Gov.uk website, all travellers will need to get a visa or an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) visa waiver to enter or transit the USA as a visitor and travellers are being told to contact the US State Department website to determine which they will need.

If you're fully vaccinated

Travellers who have had a full course of the covid jag can enter the USA with the authorities accepting any covid vaccine approved for emergency use by the World Health Organisation or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

These include the AstraZeneca, BIBP/Sinopharm, Covishield, Janssen, Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech and Sinovac vaccines.

Before boarding, passengers - regardless of vaccination status - are required to show a negative covid test taken no more than 24 hours before travel however children under two do not need to take a test and those 17 and under are exempt from the vaccination requirement.

All air passengers are also required to provide contact information to their airlines before boarding. Full requirements for pre-travel testing can be found on the CDC website.

Upon arrival, fully vaccinated travellers will also need to take a "viral test" within three to five days upon arrival but there will be no need to quarantine.

Recovered from covid recently?

If you have recovered from a documented case of covid within the past 90 days - regardless of vaccination status - you will not need to take a test three to five days after your arrival in America.

The Gov.uk website also states: "All current visa holders based in the USA who leave the country and then re-enter will need to follow the vaccine entry requirements unless they have an exception. This includes students on F-1 and M-1 visas and those previously issued with an existing National Interest Exception. Further information is on the US Embassy website.

"If you are travelling domestically within the USA, individual states and territories may have their own quarantine requirements. A full list of local quarantine requirements is available on the CDC website. You should check the list frequently as it is likely to change, sometimes daily, as rates of COVID-19 transmission increase or decrease."

If you’re not fully vaccinated

If you’re not fully vaccinated but have tested positive in the last year, you still can't enter the USA unless you meet one of the exceptions detailed on the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and US Embassy websites.

If you do have an exception to enter the US, you must present a negative result or documentation of having recovered from Covid in the past three months to the airline before boarding the flight.

Only those with an exception or US Citizens, US Nationals, and US Lawful Permanent Residents will be able to enter the US unvaccinated.

More details are on the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and US Embassy websites, which includes a list of exceptions from the vaccination requirements for certain categories of non-citizens and non-immigrants.

Covid rules when travelling to Hong Kong

Travellers who have visited the UK within the past 14 days are banned from entering Hong Kong or transit through Hong Kong International Airport.

Unvaccinated travellers are not allowed to enter.

Fully vaccinated

If you wish to visit, travellers arriving at Hong Kong International Airport from all places other than mainland China, Macao and Taiwan will need to quarantine for 14 days at a designated hotel.

Upon arrival travellers will need to provide confirmation of a hotel room reservation at their designated quarantine hotel.

You can find further details on the Hong Kong SAR government website.

The Gov.uk website states: "Most travellers arriving from the UK must be fully vaccinated Hong Kong residents. Proof of a single dose of the BioNTech vaccination will be accepted for 12 to 17 year-old Hong Kong residents travelling from the UK or those unable to receive a second vaccination for health reasons.

"Accompanied unvaccinated minors under the age of 12 who are Hong Kong residents or children of Hong Kong residents are also allowed to enter Hong Kong."

In addition, travellers arriving to Hong Kong will need to provide a negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based nucleic acid test for covid taken no more than 48 hours prior to their departure.

They add: "Other types of tests such as the reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT- LAMP) will not be accepted and do not fulfil the relevant boarding requirement."

Travellers will also require a separate certificate confirming that the testing laboratory meets the required standards.

Covid rules when travelling to Spain

Before travel to Spain, everyone (including children under 12 years old) travelling by air or sea must fill in and sign an online Health Control Form. If you do not complete this form electronically, you may submit it in paper format before boarding.

On arrival to Spanish ports and airports, you must also show the QR code (hard copy or digital) issued when you completed the Health Control Form.

Fully vaccinated

Passengers must show proof of being fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to arrival in Spain as just like France, at least 14 days must have passed since being fully vaccinated before arrival in Spain.

Your date(s) of vaccination must be specified and your final dose of your primary jag must have been administered within 270 days prior to travel to Spain.

This means that if you if your final covid dose falls outwith the 270 limit period, you must have a booster and be able to show proof.

You can do this through the NHS Covid Status app.

You may also be subject to additional checks at the point of entry including a temperature check, visual health assessment, or testing on arrival. Passengers may also be contacted and required to undertake a PCR, TMA or LAMP test at any point up to 48 hours after their arrival in Spain. More information can be found on the Spanish government’s Border Health Controls webpage.

Under 17's

Yesterday (February 11) the Spanish tourism minister Fernando Valdés confirmed that unvaccinated teenagers will be allowed to enter Spain from Monday (February 14), however they must show proof of a negative PCR test.

The test must be taken within 72 hours prior to their arrival in the country.
