A 55-year-old British tourist has died after tragically plunging hundreds of feet from cliffs on a popular Spanish holiday island. The victim, initially thought to be from Lebanon, but later confirmed as a UK passport-holder, was on holiday with his family from London.
The man was walking near the La Mola Lighthouse in Formentera when he tripped and fell about 120metres on to rocks at about 1.30pm on Tuesday, local newspaper Diario de Ibiza reported. Emergency services were alerted but where unable to locate the victim.
Medics on board an air ambulance were sent to the scene along with local Police, Guardia Civil, and firefighters. Drones and officers on jet skis were also involved in attempts to locate the man..
A body was eventually spotted by a officers on a Guardia Civil helicopter searching from the air. Not being able to see the victim from the area where the event occurred, the help of drones and jet skis was required to carry out the search.
Finally, it was the Civil Guard helicopter that found the deceased man on the rocks. The body was recovered at around 5pm on Tuesday. Relatives of the victim who were at the scene of the tragedy are receiving specialist support.
La Mola is one of Formentera's most popular attractions with spectacular views of the Mediterranean. The lighthouse also contains a museum of the island's maritime heritage of Formentera, an exhibition area, and space for concerts.
Next to the lighthouse is a monument in honour of the writer Jules Verne for the mention he makes in his book “Hector Servadac (travels and adventures through the solar system)”.
