UK tourist detained in Magaluf after taxi driver left unconscious in brutal beating

A British holidaymaker has been arrested following a brutal assault on a taxi driver in a popular Spanish resort. The vicious beating occurred during the early hours of this morning (Tuesday) in the notorious Majorca party hotspot of Magaluf.

The incident occurred at around 2am on the Avenida Magaluf with witnesses claiming the confrontation started when three young men jumped on the bonnet of the taxi driver's vehicle. Violence flared and the taxi driver was allegedly badly beaten.

He suffered a barrage of blows and kicks to his head and body during the vicious assault, which only ceased when the young men noticed witnesses were filming the incident on mobile phones, local newspaper Ultima Hora reports. The taxi driver was left unconscious on the ground and the attackers fled.

Witnesses claimed the men were drunk and covered in blood when they fled the scene and officers from the local Guardia Civil have started an investigation.

A 21-year-old Briton was later detained, while a second has been identified. Police are trying to locate him and another accomplice

Taxi drivers in the resort halted services for a time in protest and out of respect for their colleague. It is the latest violent incident in the resort, which is desperate to shed its boozy downmarket image.

A series of new laws, including banning pub crawls and unlimited drinks at some all-inclusive hotels, are being enforced. Local authorities have stated the booze-fuelled antics of young holidaymakers from the UK over decades are now no longer welcome.

Earlier this summer, British dad Tobias White-Sansom died after allegedly being beaten up outside a nightclub. The 35-year-old from Nottingham suffered three cardiac arrests after the confrontation.

Guardia Civil insisted he was restrained using “appropriate force” after allegedly butting a bouncer. They say he had a number of drugs in his system.
