THE UK will allegedly have a new Tory Prime Minister by September 5, according to information leaked to The Telegraph.
According to a senior party source speaking to The Telegraph, the 1922 Executive will agree a timeline to find Johnson’s replacement by 5pm on Monday July 11.
They stated that the party will elect a new leader by Monday September 5, ahead of PMQ’s on September 7.
The source also stated that the Tory party wanted to “reduce the field” of candidates for PM to “serious” contenders, following over 16 bids for leader being registered by Tory members since Johnson’s resignation.
The source added, “We don’t want grandstanders”, and that they only wanted candidates approved by a “reasonable proportion” of the Tory party.
Draft plans likely to be approved by the 1922 committee state that internal nominations for PM will close on Tuesday July 12. The committee plans to state that any candidate taken forward will need to have the support of 20 other Tory MPs.
The 200,000 members of the Tory party across the UK will then be invited to submit postal votes in August.
In a speech outside Number 10, Johnson confirmed his intention to step down as Prime Minister after more than 50 ministers and aides resigned under his leadership. He intends to stay in post until autumn.
Since then, many Tory MPs have launched bids for leadership, including former chancellor Rishi Sunak, and most recently, former Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch.
