UK supermarkets slashing the price of petrol as cost of living continues to rise

Supermarkets across the UK have been under fire lately, as the wholesale cost of fuel dropped significantly - but the price of petrol stayed the same at many retailers.

However, Morrisons has dropped the price of their fuel by six pence over the last week across all of its UK branches to keep in line with the average wholesale cost - going from 188.69 pence per litre to 182.69 pence.

Andrew Ball, fuel operations manager at Morrisons, said: "It's the summer holidays and we know how tough the current cost of living is for our customers.

"So we hope this fuel price reduction will help motorists to save money at this challenging time."

One petrol station in West Lothian is recording the lowest price across all supermarkets, however, as Asda in Armadale slashed their prices to 169.7 pence per litre in the last few days.

The original price of fuel at the station in West Lothian was 186.7 pence per litre, giving locals a grand total saving of 17 pence.

Here's how all the other UK supermarkets are faring across Scotland.

Tesco

Tesco supermarket announced this week that they have cut the cost of their petrol by 6.5p per litre, while diesel was slashed by 4.5p.

Current prices in Scotland are on average 169.9 pence per litre, only 0.2 pence more than Asda.

Asda

Asda kicked off the petrol price war last week by announcing that it had slashed the prices of unleaded and diesel twice in one week.

Prices are locked in at an average of 169.7 pence per litre, making it the cheapest way to fill your car in the central belt.

Sainsburys

In a similar move, Sainsbury's has cut the cost of its fuel with an average of 5p per litre being slashed at the pumps.

Victoria Newman, head of corporate communications for Sainsbury's, said: “We are committed to offering motorists great value and over the weekend we lowered the price of petrol and diesel across our forecourts.

The average UK price for petrol is sitting at 179.9 pence per litre, meaning that Scotland has an on average saving of at least ten pence for filling up the car. Check for your cheapest petrol station here.
