UK storm warning – Met Office predicts heavy, thunderous rain to hit this week

After a weekend of glorious sunshine with temperatures reaching 24C the country will be hit with days heavy rain, wind and thunderstorms.

Rain began early this morning and the Met Office has warned that a jet stream will form fronts coming in from the Atlantic, bringing with it wet and stormy weather with it by the middle of the week.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Unsettled with showers or longer spells of rain for most, some heavy with a risk of thunder.

"Windy on Wednesday and Thursday with further rain or showers."

Temperatures will be lower than last week, especially for the south east, but average for this time of year.

Conditions are likely to improve heading into the weekend, with drier and brighter weather predicted as people prepare to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Predictions from the Met Office for the next few days are:

Today

Cloudier across east and southeast England with some rain, and cooler than on Sunday.

Elsewhere, some sunny intervals, but also a good deal of cloud and showers, these heavy with possible thunder in parts of the west and north.

Tonight

Showers for many areas, whilst more persistent and at times heavy rain is likely across parts of central, southern Scotland and northeast England.

Tuesday

Rain in the east turning more showery.

Sunshine and showers elsewhere, some heavy with thunder in central and southern areas. Fewer showers in the west.

Wednesday to Friday

Outbreaks of rain, heavy in places, spreading east on Wednesday.

Rain or showers for many northern areas Thursday, drier in the south. Most places dry and bright on Friday.

Meanwhile, The Sun reports bookies have cut the odds on next month being the hottest ever, after predicting a scorcher.

Ladbrokes have cut the odds from 5/1 to just 2/1 on June being a record breaker.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “A record-breaking hot June will more than make up for what looks set to be a miserable end to May, and the odds suggest that’s exactly what we could have.”
