Brits are set to be blasted by s nowfall flurries by the end of the week with the white stuff expected to settle and leave some areas blanketed by three-inches of snow, forecasters say.
The mercury will plummet as an Arctic plunge sweeps the isles causing snow to fall over vast areas of UK ground on Saturday, according to meteorologists at WXCharts.
In maps the weather agency shows a massive snow front sweeping across Britain from the northwest, covering Scotland first before moving south.
It comes after Netweather reported there is an 80 to 100 per cent chance of snow hitting high grounds from January 31.
But the wintry front is set to spread south, affecting areas all over Britain as we move into February.
But accuweather meteorologist Alyssa Smithmyer says there is still a chance of up to three inches of the white stuff dropping by this Saturday, January 31.
She told the Daily Express : “On Saturday and Sunday, a separate low-pressure system will bring the possibility of rainy spells over north and central regions of the UK, as well as the chance for wintry showers across northern Scotland, south-central Scotland and the higher ground in northern England late Sunday.
“The track of this storm will determine how widespread the rainy spells and possibly wintry showers may be.
"If it shifts farther north, less precipitation will be likely across the UK.
“Amounts from this event will likely be light, with [the] highest amounts up to 1-3 inches in the high ground of northern Scotland.
“Any snow showers across south-central Scotland and the higher ground in northern England would likely bring little to no accumulation.”
She also warned that the wintry weather could cause travel disruption.
“Residents may experience travel disruptions in the regions where snowfall may occur," she said.
“Untreated roadways can easily become slick if snow accumulations around 1-3 inches occur in a short period of time.
“We are still monitoring this event and closely watching the potential track of the low-pressure system, chances for snow and snowfall amounts will become clearer in the coming days.”
And Saturday's snowfall will come just hours before Brits face a -4C freeze on Sunday.
Forecasts from the UK's Met Office weather agency supports the claims of looming snowfall.
They warned of a deep freeze set to spread across the isles, with many parts of the UK seeing snow as early as next week as temperatures plunge below zero.
The Met Office has warned that "severe frost" and icy conditions could lie ahead for large parts of England and Wales in the coming weeks, with parts of northeast England and northern Scotland likely to see snow in the same time period.
In its long-range forecast, the weather service predicts the white stuff could fall as early as Thursday January 27.
Temperatures dropped down to -7C on Friday, which was followed by a brief warming, but the mercury is set to plunge again as winter returns to grip the country.
And the freeze will continue into February, with WXCharts suggesting Scotland could be hit with lows of -10C and 90cm of snow, with similar conditions in the north west of the UK.
In England there could be up to eight centimetres falling in Manchester, reports said.
