UK snow: Cold weather alert issued as plummeting temperatures spark danger to life

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a cold weather alert with a risk of snow and icy conditions that could have a serious impact on health.

The agency has urged people to try to stay warm and look out for those most vulnerable to the risks of cold weather as temperatures are set to plummet across the country.

The Met Office have predicted “cold, icy and sometimes snowy conditions" that will last until the end of the week.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, said: “Cold weather can have a serious impact on health, particularly older people and those with pre-existing health conditions, as it increases the risks of heart attacks, strokes and chest infections."

He added: “During this period, it is important to check in on family, friends and relatives who may be more vulnerable to the cold weather.

"If you have a pre-existing medical condition or are over the age of 65, it is important to try and heat your home to at least 18°C if you can.’’

The alert comes as the whole of England has been hit by a cold snap today (January 16), set to last until Friday.

The Met Office has predicted that temperatures will drop "well below" the average for February as snow showers are likely to be seen throughout the week.

Jason Kelly, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Cold, icy and sometimes snowy conditions are in the forecast this week with the UK seeing more of a north-westerly regime, with temperatures well below average for the time of year.

"Wintry showers are likely at points through the week in the north of England."

The Met Office have also issued a number of yellow weather warnings for snow and ice over the next few days.

They've said that roads and railways are likely to be affected by the chilly conditions and that there's also a risk of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

Northern Ireland, the north of Scotland and parts of North Wales and the North West of England are all under snow and ice warnings lasting through to Tuesday.

Plymouth and Truro have also been placed under a yellow ice warning tomorrow.

Another yellow warning for snow and ice on Wednesday (January 18) will continue to impact the Scottish Highlands.

Mr Kelly added: “Warnings have been issued and ice is likely to be a hazard for much of the week with some tricky travel conditions possible.

"Maximum temperatures will largely only reach the low single figures with temperatures below freezing through most nights this week.”

The UKHSA urged people who are unable to heat all the rooms they use to prioritise heating their living room during the day and bedroom just before going to sleep.

They also issued a number of other tips to stay safe and warm during the cold weather, including wearing several layers of thin clothing, instead of one thicker layer.

They said that another "effective" way for keeping warm is to ensure you have plenty of hot food and drinks.
