UK's smallest Co-op has opened in a Welsh village

The UK's tiniest Co-op has opened up in a Welsh village. The budget retailer has opened the temporary pop-up store in Rhos-on-Sea, near Colwyn Bay.

It comes after the permanen Co-op supermarket in the village was destroyed by fire on May 17. The shop - which opened in 2019 - was closed at the time and no one was injured.

Co-op had first said it expected the store to reopen in just a few days. But once the full extent of the damage was realised, the retailer said the shop would be closed for around five months.

It has seen the temporary shop opened at the site. For a short period it will replace the store in Pilton in Somerset as the smallest in the UK.

A spokesperson said: "Co-op has introduced a temporary pop-up shop on the site of its Rhos on Sea store to continue to serve the community with hundreds of lines of everyday essentials while repairs to the main store are finished.

"Our temporary pop-up shop offers a range of over 500 grocery items and the team continue to work hard to serve the community and visitors to the coast, conveniently. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused while our main story remains closed, and we are working with our contractors to re-open the main Rhos store as quickly as we can.”

An exact date for the main store to re-open has not been confirmed.
