UK's new whale and dolphin trail reveals best places to see marine life from land

The UK is filled with some pretty incredible places to see wildlife , but a brand new trail is aiming to make things a little easier if it's marine life you're after!

The newly launched Hebridean Whale Trail in Scotland has opened to the public, and aims to show you all the best places along Scotland's west coast where you can see the likes of whales, dolphins and porpoises.

Oh, and no need to book a boat trip - these are all land-based viewing spots.

A new initiative from the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust, there are 33 sites along the picturesque route which spans both mainland Scotland and its islands.

It's not just whales and dolphins on offer though, as some spots are also great vantage points for looking out for the likes of basking sharks, seals and heaps more wildlife.

And while there's never a guarantee you'll see animals during your walk, you've got pretty good odds; more than a quarter of the world’s whale and dolphin species have been recorded in the region.

Of course even if you do get unlucky on the wildlife spotting front, you'll still be getting to explore some of Scotland's breathtaking landscapes.

We're talking the likes of the Scottish Highlands, the Isle of Skye, Inner Hebrides, Southern Hebrides and Clyde and the Isle of Lewis to name a few.

The trail spans everything from coastal paths to beaches and lighthouses, as well as offering stops right by key attractions in the region.

There'll be plenty of opportunities for both visitors and locals to get involved too thanks to a wide array of marine conservation activities.

Think joining volunteers to watch, identify and record marine wildlife from land or ferries, and learning more about the area at the various visitor centres along the trail.

Karl Stevens, Hebridean Whale Trail Manager, said: "Scotland’s west coast is one of Europe’s best places to catch sight of whales, dolphins and porpoises from land – and you may see bottlenose and common dolphins, harbour porpoise, minke whales and killer whales.

"We want people from all walks of life to visit the Hebridean Whale Trail to enjoy exploring the region’s unique nature, culture and history, and to be inspired to support marine conservation."

You can find out more information on the locations as well as accommodation and transport options on the Hebridean Whale Trail website .
