UK’s most generous cities revealed by GoFundMe — Is London on the list?

Households across Britain will give an estmiated £2.8 billion in total to charities during November and December this year - (PA Archive)

Donation website GoFundMe has revealed the UK’s 10 most generous cities for 2024.

The list is based on the amount of money pledged to charitable causes and personal fundraising appeals over the past year.

Liverpool topped the list, praised for its overwhelming response to the tragic Southport stabbings in July and the subsequent unrest.

Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, were fatally stabbed at a Taylor Swift-themed holiday dance club in the town, 17 miles south of Liverpool.

In the aftermath, the city raised hundreds of thousands of pounds to support the victims' families and the community, which also faced destruction from the disorder.

One major beneficiary was the Spellow Community Hub and Library in Walton, gutted by fire during the chaos. A GoFundMe campaign helped raise funds for its rebuilding, and the initiative eventually secured £1.3 million.

Additionally, a separate fundraiser resident Alex McCormick, 27, set up to support the library reached £250,000.

She told the PA news agency that “as a Scouser” she was “not surprised” to see Liverpool top the list.

“I know we get a bad rep sometimes in the press, but I think if you live here or you have lived here, the people in this city generally will do anything for anyone,” she said.

GoFundMe reported that Liverpool led the list for donations per capita, followed by London in second place.

Norwich ranked third, Manchester fourth, and Belfast fifth. The other cities in the top 10 are Cambridge (6th), Worcester (7th), Eastbourne (8th), Newcastle-Upon-Tyne (9th), and Lincoln (10th).

The GoFundMe 2024 Year in Help report also highlighted that more than 65 million donations were made globally on the platform in the last year.
