The UK's first and only Sustainable Fashion Week is returning to Bristol this weekend. The ten-day event aims to highlight the environmental impact of the global fashion industry and how it can become more sustainable.
Fashion accounts for 10 per cent of the global carbon dioxide output - more than international flights and shipping combined, according to the United Nations. Taking place across the city and online from September 16-25, there is a full line-up of events, workshops and stylings set to get participants to reimagine their wardrobes.
Each event at this year's SFW is united under the four driving themes of Regenerate, Rewear, Repurpose and Reconnect, and will bring organisations, community groups, brands and individuals together to make proactive steps towards disrupting the fast-fashion cycle.

This year's Bristol events will be located at Bristol Beacon between September 17 and 18, hosting three floors of fashion-focused and environmentally friendly events. From make, mend and alteration workshops to panel talks and clothes swaps, visitors can take proactive steps to supporting sustainable fashion by reimagining their current clothing to keep up with seasonal trends, and learning the ins and outs of the industry.
Amelia Twine, Founder of Sustainable Fashion Week said: “This year, Sustainable Fashion Week is returning in full swing with an exciting programme of events in Bristol, online, and across the UK. From our debut catwalk show, to workshops, panel discussions, clothes swaps and live stylings, there is something for everyone to get involved in to start realising the creative potential and environmental power of second-hand fashion.”
Sustainable Fashion Week will also be debuting its first catwalk show on September 21, hosted at the ethereal church venue of The Mount Without. Models will be styled in upcycled clothing designed by City of Bristol College fashion students, aiming to inspire attendees to look at their own wardrobes in a new light.
On September 22, Sustainable Fashion Week and Bristol City Centre BID will host a Re-Fresher Your Style day aimed at getting Bristol’s students and freshers to get to know their new home city. The sustainable student shopping day is being held across Park Street and Queens Road and will see businesses with sustainable offerings open their doors to Bristol’s student community with a variety of student discounts, offers and in-store events.
Vicky Lee, Head of Bristol City Centre BID, said: “We are so excited to be supporting the UK’s first and only Sustainable Fashion Week right here in Bristol. We can’t wait to introduce students to the sustainable side of the city, and hope that our Re-Fresher Your Style event will encourage Bristol’s student community to look at their wardrobe in a new light, and immerse themselves in the fantastic sustainable fashion scene that Bristol is well-known and loved for.”
This will be followed by a free-to-register sustainable student fashion panel discussion and live styling evening at The Vintage Thrift Store, Park Street. Students can hear from industry experts, including Sustainable Fashion Week founder Amelia Twine, on how they can help disrupt the fast fashion industry and participate in the slow fashion movement, alongside a live styling event with complimentary food and drinks from Bristol Folk House and Pizzarova.
