UK's first driverless buses take to the road - and will soon have passengers

The UK’s first full-size driverless buses will take to the road this week.

Autonomous vehicles will be tested over the Forth Road Bridge in Scotland.

The buses, operated by Stagecoach, will use the same roads as other vehicles and could begin carrying passengers by the summer.

The two-week trial will involve five single-deckers that will travel between the Ferrytoll Park and Ride in Fife and Edinburgh Park.

If they go into public service this summer, they will carry up to 36 passengers each, or more than 10,000 a week, on a 14-mile route.

The £6.1million Project CAVForth pilot is part funded by the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles, in partnership with Innovate UK.

Sam Greer, regional director for Stagecoach in Scotland, said: “This is a major step forward in our journey to fully launch the UK’s first full-sized autonomous bus service.”
