Budget grocer Lidl has officially been named the cheapest supermarket for March - despite still being more expensive than they were a year ago.
The discounted retailer is famed for its low priced products, which means that the announcement will come as welcome news to families who are still grappling with rising costs.
A recent report from The Grocer found that the German supermarket had the lowest overall price of a basket containing a variety of general household items.
The report found that a basket of 33 items cost £53.06 at Lidl last week compared to:
- Asda - £60.19
- Sainsbury's - £63.26 at
- Tesco - £64.55
- Morrisons - £72.73 at
- Waitrose - £85.40
Hull Live reports that it comes after the same basket of items cost 4.5% more than a year ago, or an extra £2.31, due to rising inflation.
Food prices have continued to soar to record-levels following the recent cost of living crisis, with inflation levels reaching 5.5 percent, reports The Mirror.
Kantar, which records prices, said inflation in February was 4.3%.
Prices are rising the fastest for items including savoury snacks, fresh beef, and cat food. However, the cost of bacon, beer, lager and spirits fell.
In terms of service, Lidl came second to last, with a score of 65/100. Morrisons came bottom at 58/100. The top supermarket for service was Asda, with 85/100, then Waitrose (77/100), Tesco (75/100) and Sainsbury's (72/100).
