Lidl has been crowned the cheapest supermarket of January 2022 by Which?.
The consumer watchdog compared prices for a basket of 23 items across the major supermarket chains every day last month, and found that the average cost of a Lidl basket was £24.78.
Aldi placed second, with a basket setting shoppers back an average of £25.37 — just 59p more than Lidl.

Asda, Tesco, and Sainsbury's followed behind, whilst Waitrose was found to be the most expensive — with a basket of 23 items costing an average of £33.94.
This marks an increase of £9, or 37%, compared to Lidl.
Sharing the news of its triumph on its Facebook page, the bargain giant wrote: "More bang for your basket. We’ve been crowned Which? cheapest basket for January, in case you didn’t already know… It’s just more proof of us always being Lidl on price."
The post amassed over 1,600 likes and almost 500 comments — mainly from Lidl fans applauding the victory.

One wrote: "Lidl's meat is the best! And I feel valued shopping in lidl all the staff make an effort to speak well done".
A second commented: "Love Lidl save half my usual spend every week and their own special brands are as good as any of the other supermarkets and even better on times".
"Just back home from my favourite shop. Lidl rocks," a third shared.
Another said: "I absolutely love Lidl. I save so much money and time shopping there. I have some bags for life that are about 25 years old, I love them (they're like Mary Poppins' bags) and the cashiers always say they don't make them anymore!"
"Keep it up your team is great and your products are brilliant," stated a fifth.
"Love Lidl, so much more for your money," a sixth posted.
