UK’s biggest cinema screen reopens at BFI IMAX after major upgrade

The UK’s biggest cinema screen is back after renovating its screen, seating, and sound

The BFI is reopening its IMAX cinema in Waterloo following a major renovation that has seen it undergo improvements to its screen, sound, and seating. At a mammoth 65-feet high - the equivalent of five double-decker buses - and 85-feet wide, the giant screen is the biggest in the UK.

Its relaunch is timed to the release of two mega-blockbusters in the shape of Wakanda Forever, Disney’s superpowered sequel to the billion-dollar grossing Black Panther, and the next chapter of the biggest film of all time in Avatar: The Way of Water, which arrives November 16, two cinematic experiences that truly demand to be seen on the biggest screen possible.

Top of the bill on the list of new additions is a 4K laser projection system that features a new optical engine. There’s also a slew of IMAX tech working behind the scenes to offer an enhanced resolution, sharper and brighter images, and deeper contrast. It all combines to deliver more distinct visuals with more vivid colors than ever before, according to the BFI.

As for the audio, the screen is now equipped with IMAX’s new 12-channel sound technology, with side and overhead channels that the BFI says deliver greater dynamic range and precision. Other upgrades to the 493-seater auditorium include plush new seats with four wheelchair spaces and new carpeting.

For film buffs, there’s a traditional 70mm IMAX projector – of which less than 60 remain globally – and a standard D-Cinema projection system, plus scope to project from 35mm and standard 70mm. They should come in handy for the retrospectives and classic film screenings the BFI is renowned for. Earlier this year, the venue presented its first-ever screening in IMAX of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (marking its 40thanniversary), and Jaws.

Since launching in 1999, the BFI IMAX has become one of the most successful IMAX cinemas in the world, welcoming an average of 300,000 visitors each year. It has also played host to some of the world’s biggest film premieres, including Mission Impossible: Fallout, Inception, The Batman, and X-Men: Apocalypse.

BFI CEO Ben Roberts said: “We are extremely excited to relaunch BFI IMAX with these upgrades to deliver an even greater cinematic experience. This screen has always been a cultural destination for London and, in resuming programming of this iconic landmark, our ambition is to grow audiences for a rich diversity of screen culture.”
