Downing Street has slammed Elon Musk’s comments on his X social media platform after the tech billionaire waded into the online chaos surrounding riots flaring up in UK towns and cities.

Prime minister Sir Keir Starmer’s spokesperson said there was “no justification” for Musk’s claim that “civil war is inevitable” in response to a post that blamed mass migration and open borders for the disorder.

X has been criticised for helping foment disinformation that’s been fuelling far-right mobs to attack ethnic minorities and police, following false claims of the suspect’s identity after the killing of three young girls in Southport.

A legal expert warns anyone posting on social media assisting or encouraging the disorder on UK streets in recent days could be prosecuted over the violence, even if they were not at the scene.

Mark Jones, partner at law firm Payne Hicks Beach, said individuals “do not need to be present when the crime itself is carried out, yet can be as guilty as the person who commits the crime itself”.
