The UK Foreign Secretary has been the talk of Twitter after her pronunciation of ‘Taoiseach’ on RTE News went viral.
Liz Truss made the bizarre blunder while speaking about the UK government’s plans to override the Northern Ireland protocol.
An Taoiseach, Micheal Martin, had spoken out about the proposition and said: “It represents a new low point because the natural expectation of democratic countries like ourselves, the UK, and all across Europe is that we honour international agreements that we enter into.”
When asked about his comments, Ms. Truss responded and failed to pronounce the Irish word correctly leaving herself at the mercy of the Twitter community.
She said: “I would strongly encourage the Irish tea sock to discuss this with the EU.”
It wasn’t long before the internet caught on to the mishap, and since Monday evening thousands of tweets have been circulating.
One person wrote: “If Liz Truss pronounces Taoiseach as "tea sock", imagine what she'd do if she had to pronounce Ceann Comhairle…. Or Tanaiste.”
Another posted the clip of Truss with the caption: “The British foreign secretary Liz Truss here mispronouncing the name of the Taoiseach as ‘tea sock’.
“I’ve never heard it mistaken this way before and the mangling of the Irish language is a long-established tactic of the British to mock and undermine Ireland and her people.”
Among the thousands of people speaking about the blunder was a third who simply wrote: “Just pure ignorance by Liz truss.”
The public went as far as to set up a Twitter account under the username ‘Irish Tea Sock’ with the bio: “I am the leader of Ireland, according to Liz Truss. All views here are in accordance with the evil EU overlords and that Paddy in the Whitehouse.”
