The United Kingdom is preparing for another round of snowstorms this week, with significant snowfall expected across several regions. According to weather maps from WXCharts, large parts of Scotland and sections of northeast and northwest England will be covered in snow. While cities such as Manchester, Leeds, and areas further south may not experience snowfall, the entire nation is expected to face freezing temperatures by the weekend.
On March 1, temperatures in the Scottish Highlands could plummet to as low as -5C, while other regions, including the southeast, will also drop below zero. The Met Office predicts snowfall on February 26, but its forecast indicates lighter snow than what WXCharts suggests.
The official UK forecaster states that snowfall will be light, mainly affecting the Scottish Highlands between midnight and 3 a.m. on February 27. Other regions will experience scattered showers but are not expected to see any major snow accumulation, told The Mirror.
Five-Day Weather Forecast
From Sunday, February 23, through Thursday, February 27, heavy rain is forecasted to move slowly east overnight. By dawn, rain will persist across East Anglia and southeast England. Following this, clear spells with scattered showers will emerge, accompanied by strong winds in the northwest.
On Monday, rain will clear from the southeast, giving way to a mix of sunshine and showers across the UK. According to the Express, “temperatures will be close to average in the north, but mild in the southern sunshine.” Tuesday will bring sunny spells with intermittent showers for many areas, while Wednesday is expected to see widespread rain, at times turning heavy. Thursday will be largely drier and brighter, though the far north and southwest may experience lingering rain.
Snow Returns in March
Looking ahead, weather models show that snow will make a comeback in March, with northern Scotland seeing flurries from midday on March 7. By early March 8, snowfall is expected to advance southward, covering more than half of England and large parts of Wales.
Cities such as Cardiff, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, and Newcastle are all set to experience snowfall. Maps indicate that up to 7cm of snow could accumulate in just one hour across Yorkshire on the morning of March 9.
Amber Weather Warning Issued
Meanwhile, the Met Office has issued a serious amber weather warning, lasting 15 hours, as three cities brace for harsh conditions. The warning for heavy rain, in effect from 3 p.m. today until 6 a.m. tomorrow, applies to several areas in Wales, including Cardiff, Newport, and Swansea.
“Precipitations will clear to the east overnight but will be followed by showers in the early hours of Monday morning,” the Met Office stated. The agency predicts rainfall of 50mm to 70mm in higher inland areas, with the most exposed hills potentially receiving up to 100mm.
As the UK gears up for turbulent weather, residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions against the upcoming storms.
