UK introduces new online entry permit for European visitors

European travellers planning a trip to the UK will now need to navigate a new digital entry system designed to enhance security and simplify border crossings from the continent to Britain.

Starting from Wednesday, European travellers heading to the UK will need a new online entry permit as the British government updates its travel regulations.

The move, aimed at enhancing security and streamlining entry procedures, marks a significant change for visitors from the continent.

The new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) permit is part of a broader plan to modernise the UK’s border system.

While the requirement takes effect immediately, a buffer period lasting several months will allow travellers to adjust to the new system.

This means that during this introductory phase – expected to last until September or October – passengers can still board planes and trains without an ETA.

The introduction of the ETA is one of many changes in UK border policy following Brexit.

When the UK left the European Union in 2020, it regained full control over its immigration system, allowing it to implement new security measures independently.

The ETA aligns with broader government efforts to digitise border controls and manage visitor entry more effectively.

Five years on, has Brexit put Britain at a disadvantage in EU talks?

From France to Britain

For those travelling from France to the UK – whether for business, leisure, or a quick weekend getaway – the ETA adds an extra step before departure.

The good news is that the UK government claims it’s going to be a straightforward and affordable process, with the permit costing €12 if purchased before 9 April.

However the price will then increase to €19.

The ETA is valid for two years and allows multiple visits of up to six months at a time.

Once approved, travellers will benefit from a more efficient entry process, including access to eGates for faster border clearance.

The UK government also maintains that this digital system will help reduce waiting times and hopes to improve overall travel experiences.

How it works

Travellers can apply for an ETA online via a government website or a smartphone app.

The application process – which takes around 10 minutes – requires a passport photo and a facial image upload.

While most applications are approved within minutes, authorities recommend applying at least three days in advance to avoid any last-minute issues.

Importantly, even babies and children will need an ETA, although flight passengers transiting through the UK without crossing border control are exempt – an exception made following concerns raised by Heathrow Airport.

Growing global scheme

The ETA system is not entirely new. First introduced in 2023 for Qatari travellers, it was later extended to five Gulf states and, in January 2024, to nationals from 50 additional territories, including Argentina, South Korea, and New Zealand.

More than 1.1 million visitors received ETAs before the end of 2024.

The UK’s initiative mirrors the European Union’s own ETIAS scheme, which will require visa-exempt nationals – including British citizens – to obtain digital travel authorisation before visiting 30 European countries.

However, ETIAS has been delayed until 2026.

For now, UK residents and those with an existing UK immigration status are exempt from the ETA requirement, including Irish citizens who are resident in Ireland.
