It’s been a wet start to the week across parts of the UK, and the unsettled weather isn’t going anywhere just yet. Heavy rain is on the cards for Wednesday morning, with more showers and blustery conditions expected right through the Easter weekend.
The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for rain, in place until midday on Wednesday, covering south-west England, Wales, parts of the West Midlands and the north-west. A separate yellow warning was issued for eastern parts of Northern Ireland, running from 2am until 9pm.
Whitechurch in west Wales was soaked on Tuesday, recording 50.2mm of rainfall. According to forecasters, some areas within the warning zone could receive up to 75mm before conditions ease.
Northern Ireland is also due a fair bit of rain, with most areas expected to see between 20 and 30mm. However, higher ground in Counties Antrim and Down might get up to 60mm before conditions start to calm down from the west later in the evening.

The Met Office warned of “persistent rain, which will be heavy at times,” but added there’s no need to panic just yet. Chief meteorologist Matthew Lehnert explained that “significant impacts are not anticipated” thanks to recent spells of dry weather.
Still, the Environment Agency has issued a flood warning for the River Torridge between Dolton and Bideford in Devon, meaning flooding is expected there. There are also 14 flood alerts – where flooding is possible – in place across the southeast, Devon, and Cornwall as of Wednesday morning.
Lehnert noted that the wet and windy conditions are being driven by a low-pressure system moving up from near Portugal. As the system tracks northwards throughout the day, it’s expected to bring cloud, brisk winds and more rain, although it may turn drier in southern areas, with some sunny spells breaking through later on.
Looking ahead, the Met Office says many places should enjoy drier and brighter weather on Thursday, with just a few scattered showers. But the Easter weekend is still looking changeable, with spells of rain expected in between brighter intervals. By Sunday, there’s even a chance of hail and thunder in some areas.
Tuesday brought a real mix of temperatures across the country – from a chilly minus 2.2°C up in Loch Glascarnoch, Scotland, to a much milder 17.4°C down in Frittenden, Kent.
The good news? Forecasters say there’s a more settled spell on the horizon, with drier, sunnier weather likely to return next week. So, if you’re hoping for a bit of sunshine this Easter, there’s still hope yet.
