UK Heatwave: Sleep experts share tricks to get a good night's kip in hot weather

The UK has been issued an amber weather warning issued to the south of the UK and with it comes a number of sleepless nights.

While Scotland will be dodging the 'extreme heat', Glasgow is set to sizzle next week with temperatures higher than Tenerife. The hot weather never lasts too long in Scotland as we aren't so accustomed to it, many struggle to sleep in the heat.

According to sleep experts at Silentnight, there is a direct connection between hot weather and poor sleep. As Wales Online reports, Silentnight sleep expert Hannah Shore has shared some tip tops on how to get a peaceful sleep during the hot weather.

She said: “Sleeping in the heat can be a real nightmare, we are constantly throwing off the duvet, twisting and turning and trying to find the “cool” side of the pillow, all of which affects the quality of the sleep we get.

"If you have difficulty sleeping during the warmer months, you should consider having a different duvet for summer and winter. Your summer duvet should be a lightweight duvet, and if you’re still too warm to sleep, this can be swapped for a sheet.

“You should also ensure your bedding is made from breathable fibres. Natural fibres are good at temperature regulating however, some people find these materials a little heavy. If that’s you, opt for polyester, as these will offer you a breathable sleeping environment but will not be as heavy."

  1. Use a lightweight summer duvet
  2. Ensure your bedding is made from breathable fibres
  3. Get a mattress that regulates body temperature
  4. Keep curtains and blinds closed during the daytime
  5. Drink lots of water throughout the day to stay hydrated

As well as changing up the duvet and mattress, Jonathan Warren, director at mattress specialist Time4Sleep swears by using a hot water bottle. He adds: “Believe it or not, your hot water bottle can be used as an easy way to cool down your bed before sleep. Despite the name, simply fill your hot bottle as normal and leave it in the freezer for a few hours before bedtime to transform into a nifty ice pack.

“When you’re ready for bed, place the hot water bottle in-between the sheets and allow the sheets to cool down. For those who struggle to fall asleep during the heat, this little hack may prove to be especially useful in helping you drift off sweat-free."
