UK Braces for a Mini Heatwave as Jet Stream Twist Brings Summer Vibes Early

Get your sunnies and BBQs ready because it’s about to get toasty across the UK. The Met Office has revealed we’re in for another warm spell next week, and it could have us thinking it’s summer already – even though it’s still spring.

Starting from Monday, April 28, things are looking up, temperature-wise. The forecast says we’ll see the mercury steadily climb into the early to mid-20s. And by Wednesday, London could be basking in a balmy 24C, which is quite the jump considering the usual spring average is around 14C.

So, what’s behind this mini heatwave that’s about to roll in? According to the Met Office, it’s all down to something called an “amplified” jet stream. If that sounds fancy, don’t worry – they’ve broken it down. The jet stream is shifting in a way that causes a ‘blocked’ weather pattern, meaning high pressure is parking itself over us and not budging. That’s the kind of weather that sticks around, bringing clear skies and settled conditions for days – or even weeks if we’re lucky.

The Met Office explained to X: “A spell of much warmer weather is on the way next week. As the jet stream becomes more amplified this weekend, a ‘blocked’ weather pattern will develop across northwest Europe – but how long this lasts for is uncertain.”

This pattern isn’t just about warmth either. With the sunshine comes a few health warnings. UV levels are expected to spike right alongside the temperatures, so if you’re heading outside, they recommend slathering on that SPF. It’s not just sunburn that’s a concern though – hay fever sufferers, brace yourselves. The pollen count is on the rise too, and the Met Office has flagged this with a high warning for the coming days. Their five-day pollen forecast could be a lifesaver if you’re prone to sneezing your way through spring.

Looking at the broader forecast for April 29 to May 8, most of the UK is set to enjoy dry and sunny conditions. The north and northwest of Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland might see a bit more cloud and the odd drizzle, but for everyone else, it’s mostly sunshine on the cards. Early May could bring a shift though, with some unsettled patches creeping in between those dry spells.

As the heatwave settles in, people are being reminded not to underestimate spring sun. Even though it might not feel as fierce as summer, UV levels and heat exposure can still pose risks, especially for vulnerable groups.

Further ahead, from May 9 to 23, it’s back to a more familiar mixed bag. The Met Office says we can expect a typical spring mix of sunny, dry days and some wetter, stormier moments thrown in. Temperatures should stay around normal or even a touch above, with the chance of another brief heatwave popping up before summer officially begins.

Either way, next week will be a cracking one weather-wise, so make the most of the sunshine while it lasts.
