Ugly Edinburgh Princes Street shopfront set to be ripped away in massive makeover

Plans could see a section of Princes Street shops given a whole new look as proposals hope to rip away their "jumbled and mismatched" store fronts.

Proposals put forward to the city council this week have detailed plans to give the units at 78 Princes Street and Hanover Street a huge makeover to replace the current facade.

Originally added to the listed buildings in the 1980s, developers have said they hope to 'simplify' the design, with a more sleek and matching front to stretch from Office shoes along round the corner to JD Sports.

Sharing drawings of the proposed new look, images show the colour scheme of the units would also be changed, with the grey granite to be replaced by sandstone in cream and 'red tones.'

A design statement read: "The existing elevation is clad in a combination of marble, aluminium and granite. Mismatched and disorganised proportions create a jumbled appearance.

"The different heights of the parapet, with their faint and unrelated nod to art-deco stepping, contribute to the disorganised impression.

"The proposal does not introduce any radical new impact, but does create a more cohesive local environment and allow the existing historic building fabric to be seen more clearly."

An official decision is yet to be made by the council, you can find more on the application on the planning portal.
