Uganda Landfill Landslide Death Toll Rises To 13

Bodies of mother and baby found as death toll from Odesa drone attack rises

Authorities in Uganda have confirmed that the death toll from a devastating landslide at a garbage dump in Kampala has climbed to 13. The tragic incident occurred after a portion of the city's only landfill site collapsed following heavy rainfall, engulfing nearby homes while residents were asleep.

Rescue operations are currently underway as emergency services work tirelessly to locate any potential survivors buried under the debris. So far, 14 individuals have been successfully rescued, with the possibility of more individuals still trapped, although the exact number remains unknown.

The Kampala Capital City Authority had initially reported eight fatalities, but the figure has since been revised to 13 by the police. The Uganda Red Cross has set up tents to provide temporary shelter for those displaced by the landslide.

The landfill, known as Kiteezi, has been the primary disposal site for Kampala's waste for many years, gradually forming into a significant mound. Local residents have raised concerns about the environmental pollution and safety hazards posed by the site's accumulation of hazardous waste.

Efforts to secure an alternative landfill location have faced prolonged delays, exacerbating the risks associated with the current site. Tragically, similar incidents have occurred in other African countries due to the mismanagement of municipal garbage, resulting in significant loss of life.

Recent heavy rains in parts of Uganda have triggered flooding and landslides, with this latest disaster underscoring the urgent need for improved waste management practices and disaster preparedness measures in the region.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time as the community comes together to support those affected by this devastating event.
