UFC fan tackled to ground after climbing cage following Charles Oliveira fight

A female fan had to be stopped from climbing into the cage after Charles Oliveira had choked out Justin Gaethje in the main event at UFC 274.

The Brazilian had forced his challenger to tap out in the first round when the woman ran from her seat in the stands and leapt on to the stage which surrounds the cage. She then began to climb the fence before she was thrown to the ground by a security guard.

The woman looked dazed and then attempted to run for an exit at the Footprint Center in Phoenix but she was met by security guards who escorted her away just as Gaethje was leaving the octagon to return to his changing room.

Oliveira was left to celebrate his victory but was not crowned lightweight champion after being stripped of his belt for failing to make weight on Friday. The 32-year-old will now take on a leading contender later this year with Islam Makachev, Michael Chandler and Conor McGregor among the frontrunners.

"There's something wrong here," Oliveira said after his 11th successive UFC victory. "The champion's name is Charles Oliveira. I made weight Thursday and you took my belt away. I'm a problem for the entire division. I am the champion. This is my title. It should be here."

Gaethje did not speak to the media after his second defeat in three fights and his second successive defeat in a title fight. He later took to social media to say: "Name of the game. Appreciate all the love. Congratulations to Charles Oliveira."

The American was also choked out by Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2020 in what proved to the Russian's final fight before he retired as the undefeated champion. Gaethje returned to winning ways by outpointing Michael Chandler in an all-time classic last year.

Since losing to Oliveira, he has been called out by Dustin Poirier who has been out of action since his second successive victory over McGregor. Poirier stopped Gaethje in 2018 in a thriller and appears open to the prospect of a second instalment.
