UFC 292 post-event facts: Ian Machado Garry enters record book with 6-0 octagon start

One of the biggest UFC events of the year thus far went down Saturday with UFC 292, which took place at TD Garden in Boston and featured two championship fights with different results.

In the main event, Sean O'Malley (17-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) shocked Aljamain Sterling (23-4 MMA, 15-4 UFC) with a second-round TKO to capture the bantamweight belt, while in the co-headliner, Zhang Weili (24-3 MMA, 8-2 UFC) got her second strawweight title reign off a dominant start with a lopsided unanimous decision over Brazilian challenger Amanda Lemos (13-3-1 MMA, 7-3 UFC).

Event stats

The UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance payout for the event totaled $340,500.

O’Malley, Weili, Brad Katona and Cody Gibson earned $50,000 UFC 292 fight-night bonuses.

UFC 292 drew an announced attendance of 18,293 for a live gate of $7,247,654.86.

Betting favorites went 10-2 on the card.

Betting favorites fell to 17-12 in UFC headliners this year.

Total fight time for the 12-bout card was 2:30:12.

Sean O'Malley def. Aljamain Sterling

O’Malley became the eighth fighter to hold the undisputed UFC bantamweight championship.

O’Malley became the second fighter to win a UFC championship after being signed to the promotion through Dana White’s Contender Series. Jamahal Hill also accomplished the feat.

O’Malley has earned 13 of 17 career victories by stoppage. He’s finished all six of his UFC stoppage victories by knockout.

O’Malley’s six knockout victories in UFC bantamweight competition are tied for second in divisional history behind T.J. Dillashaw (seven).

O’Malley’s eight fight-night bonuses for UFC bantamweight fights are tied with Dillashaw for most in divisional history.

Sterling has suffered both of his career stoppage losses by knockout.

Sterling’s total fight time of 3:55:40 in UFC bantamweight competition is the most in divisional history.

Zhang Weili def. Amanda Lemos

Weili’s three victories in UFC bantamweight title fights are tied with Rose Namajunas second-most in divisional history behind Joanna Jedrzejczyk (six).

Weili landed 296 total strikes in her victory, the single-fight record for a women’s UFC fight.

Weili’s disparity of +267 in total strikes landed (296-to-29) is the second-biggest margin in a UFC title fight. Kamaru Usman outlanded Tyron Woodley by a +276 margin at UFC 235.

Weili has earned four of her seven UFC victories by decision.

Weili’s five fight-night bonuses in UFC strawweight bouts are tied for third-most in divisional history behind Jessica Andrade (eight) and Namajunas (six).

Lemos suffered the first decision loss of her career.

Ian Machado Garry def. Neil Magny

Ian Machado Garry’s (13-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) six-fight UFC winning streak at welterweight is the longest active streak in the division.

Garry became the second welterweight in UFC history to start 6-0 with the promotion. Kamaru Usman also accomplished the feat.

Neil Magny (28-11 MMA, 21-10 UFC) has alternated losses and wins over his past six fights.

Magny has landed 1,356 significant strikes in UFC welterweight competition, the most in divisional history.

Mario Bautista def. Da'Mon Blackshear

Mario Bautista’s (13-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) five-fight UFC winning streak at bantamweight is the third-longest active streak in the division behind Sterling (10) and Merab Dvalishvili (nine).

Da'Mon Blackshear (14-6-1 MMA, 2-2-1 UFC) has suffered all six of his career losses by decision.

Marlon Vera def. Pedro Munhoz

Marlon Vera (21-8-1 MMA, 15-7 UFC) 13 victories in UFC bantamweight competition are tied with T.J. Dillashaw for second-most in divisional history behind Sterling (14).

Pedro Munhoz (20-8 MMA, 10-8 UFC) has suffered all eight of his career losses by decision.

Brad Tavares def. Chris Weidan

Brad Tavares (20-8 MMA, 15-8 UFC) has earned 13 of his 15 UFC victories by decision.

Tavares’ 15 victories in UFC middleweight competition are tied for second-most in divisional history behind Michael Bisping (16).

Tavares’ total fight time of 4:56:40 in UFC middleweight competition is second-most in divisional history behind Bisping (5:15:15).

Tavares’ 13 decision victories in UFC middleweight competition are the most in divisional history.

Tavares’ 13 decision victories in UFC competition are tied for second-most in company history behind Magny (14).

Chris Weidman (15-7 MMA, 11-7 UFC) suffered the first decision loss of his career.

Weidman failed to complete a takedown for the second time in his UFC career. Both of those performances have come in his past two fights.

Gregory Rodrigues def. Denis Tiuliulin

Gregory Rodrigues (14-5 MMA, 5-2 UFC) has earned 12 of his 14 career victories by stoppage.

Denis Tiuliulin (10-8 MMA, 1-3 UFC) has suffered six of his eight career losses by stoppage.

Kurt Holobaugh def. Austin Hubbard

Kurt Holobaugh (20-7 MMA, 1-4 UFC) has earned 17 of his 20 career victories by stoppage.

Austin Hubbard (15-7 MMA, 3-5 UFC) has suffered all three of his career stoppage losses by submission.

Brad Katona def. Cody Gibson

Katona (13-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) became the first two-time winner of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series.

Katona has earned all three of his UFC victories by decision.

Andre Petroski def. Gerald Meerschaert

Andre Petroski’s (10-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) five-fight UFC winning streak at middleweight is the second-longest active streak in the division behind Dricus Du Plessis (six).

Natalia Silva def. Andrea Lee

Natalia Silva’s (16-5-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) four-fight UFC winning streak at women’s flyweight is the fifth-Longest active streak in the division behind Alexa Grasso (five), Erin Blanchfield (five), Manon Fiorot (five) and Maycee Barber (five).

Andrea Lee’s (13-8 MMA, 5-6 UFC) three-fight losing skid is tied for the longest of her career. She hasn’t earned a victory since November 2021.

Lee has suffered six of her seven career losses by decision. That includes all six of her UFC defeats.

Karine Silva def. Maryna Moroz

Karine Silva (17-4 MMA, 3-0 UFC) has earned all 17 of her career victories by stoppage. She’s finished 13 of those wins in Round 1.

Silva’s three submission victories in UFC women’s flyweight competition are tied for second-most in divisional history behind Gillian Robertson (six).

Silva became the first female in UFC history to earn three consecutive victories by first-round submission.

Maryna Moroz (11-5 MMA, 6-5 UFC) fell to 3-2 since she moved up to the UFC women’s flyweight division in March 2019.

Moroz suffered the first stoppage loss of her career with a submission defeat.
