UFC 279 winner Norma Dumont: ‘If the 145 belt goes up, I’m the one that’s the next contender’

LAS VEGAS – Norma Dumont thinks she should be next in line for the women’s featherweight title.

Dumont (8-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) defeated Danyelle Wolf (1-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at UFC 279 on Saturday with a dominant unanimous decision win over the three-time U.S. national champion boxer at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The Brazilian showed off her hands and grappling against Wolf and is ready to challenge UFC dual champion Amanda Nunes for her featherweight title.

“I’m here to fight. If the UFC doesn’t want to give me a title shot now, let us work,” Dumont told MMA Junkie and other reporters though an interpreter at the post-fight news conference. “Let us fight. I want to beat somebody up.

“If the 145 belt goes up, I’m the one that’s the next contender. And if anybody wants to go in front of me, they’re going to have to fight me first.”

With Wolf’s credentialed boxing background, many were surprised to see Dumont stand toe-to-toe with her. But not only was Dumont able to do that, she was able to drop her on numerous occasions – something she wasn’t surprised by.

“The strategy was to feel her out, see where I could take the fight,” Dumont said. “I’m really confident in my striking and my jiu-jitsu and wrestling, but I didn’t feel any danger, so I felt comfortable striking with her. But of course the holes showed up that I could take her down, and I did that too.

“I think she would have gotten beat up with big gloves or with small gloves. It didn’t matter.”
