UEFA deadline looms as Manchester United need to name Europa League squad for clash vs Barcelona

As one deadline passes, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has another one to consider.

Due to an injury to Christian Eriksen, United actually did some business on deadline day. Bayern Munich midfielder Marcel Sabitzer came in on a six-month loan to add options for the team in midfield.

Sabitzer joined Wout Weghorst and Jack Butland to make three signings for United in the January window. Every single player was on loan however so there was no outlay bar loan fees and wages.

And another deadline is approaching for United. Ten Hag needs to name his Europa League squad for the knockout phase. Unfortunately because United were unable to top their group ahead of Real Sociedad they must play another round of fixtures which comes in the form of a two-legged knockout clash against Barcelona.

UEFA's Ruling states: "As of the round of 16, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registration must be completed by 2 February 2023 (24.00CET) at the latest. This deadline cannot be extended.

"Any or all of the players from the above quota of three may have been fielded for another club in the qualifying phase, play-offs or group stage of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League or UEFA Europa Conference League."

The squad United submitted back in September for the group stages is as follows:

Goalkeepers: David De Gea, Martin Dubravka, Tom Heaton.

Defenders: Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Axel Tuanzebe, Raphael Varane, Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Midfielders: Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes, Fred, Scott McTominay, Facundo Pellistri, Jadon Sancho, Donny van de Beek.

Forwards: Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Martin Dubravka, Cristiano Ronaldo and Axel Tuanzebe have all left the club since the group stages and Donny van de Beek is out for the rest of the season through injury. This means there are enough spaces for United's three new additions.

Heaton, Maguire, Shaw, Wan-Bissaka, Scott McTominay, Sancho, Butland, Garnacho and Rashford all count as home-grown players, meeting UEFA's quota on that front. There is then a subsection called "club-trained" players, who are those who were on the club's books for at least three years between the age of 15 and 21, and "association-trained" players who were on another club's books in the same association for three years between the ages of 15 and 21.

Overall United should find no problems going into the registration deadline.
